A waistcoat is so much more than just an accessory; it elevates your style, adding personality to your look and is a great way to make a statement. With so many do’s and don’ts, one question we’re often asked is: “How should I wear a waistcoat?”

Our advice is simple – follow your style instincts and wear what makes you look great and feel comfortable. Read on to discover our guide on how to wear a waistcoat, so you can find a style that works for you without getting too tied up on all the ‘rules’.

Do I leave the bottom button undone?

For us, leaving the bottom button of your waistcoat undone is the ultimate style myth. The tradition likely dates back to the early 1900’s, when King Edward VII first started the trend. Apparently, he grew to be so rotund that he was unable to fasten the bottom button on his waistcoat. Out of respect for the King, the British court followed suit and it soon became the fashion to leave the bottom button undone.

In our view, however, this trend can make you look untidy, particularly if you are a groom, as it leaves your shirt and waistband exposed, which doesn’t look great in photos.

Can I wear my waistcoat dressed down?

A waistcoat is undoubtedly a stylish addition to a two piece suit, however, dressing it down with a pair of jeans can work just as well. When worn casually, a waistcoat in a contrasting colour or pattern looks best with this relaxed style and, if you’re wearing a jacket, complete your look with a fancy silk handkerchief. Whether you choose to wear your waistcoat formally with a suit or casually with jeans, it will surely add an extra element of style to your look.

What style of waistcoat should I wear?

Choosing a waistcoat style that complements your body shape is the key. Traditionally, the go-to choice was double-breasted, but we find this style suits a tall build best. The most versatile option, which tends to suit all body shapes, is the single-breasted waistcoat, however, there are many other styles to choose from. Check out our blog post to discover the best waistcoat styles for this season.

Our top tips on how to wear a waistcoat well:

1) Show your personality and don’t be afraid to be bold with colour and/ or pattern

2) Add some flair with a contrast lining on the back of your waistcoat

3) Make sure your waistcoat is long enough to cover your shirt and waistband for a more polished look

4) Perhaps ignore the bottom button rule

Waistcoats offer a great deal of style, adding a finishing touch to many different suit styles. More often than not, your suit will look unfinished without the addition of a waistcoat. The most important thing to consider when looking for a waistcoat is to look for a style that suits you best.
